Royal Academy of Engineering – Office Fit Out (for Knight Harwood)

The Royal Academy of Engineering is a Grade I listed building located between Pall Mall and The Mall, and is the UK’s national academy for engineering. Staff remained in occupation whilst the refurbishment and adaptation of three lower levels took place. The plan was to create an Enterprise Hub providing new services and AV facilities for Academy Fellows to support promising engineering entrepreneurs, through mentoring, training and funding to accelerate technological enterprise. The scheme was designed by Wright and Wright Architects.
Structural modifications including the removal of a secondary stair and the reconfiguration of the principal stair creating additional floor space. The original five metre high brick interior was exposed to open up the original circulation routes and reinstate much of the original natural light and ventilation.
Calanpoint works included all specialist and general joinery. The scheme included a significant amount of oak panelling and oak units to conceal the new M&E services and house the new AV equipment, oak screens and doors to separate the space and create meeting rooms as well as a new reception desk, touchdown desks and tea points.
